Up-Skilling Led Kamaria from Stagnation to Career Success with Free Coaching

“My Career Coach called it ‘up-skilling’ but I just thought I needed to improve my business and accounting skills to get the career I wanted,” Kamaria recalls, “I couldn’t pay my bills and that motivated me, so I went to the E&ES American Job Center in Harvey and started working with my Coach.”

Kamaria has held jobs in accounting and business, but just didn’t have the training she needed to advance. “My last boss told me I was manager material with a great customer service and management skills, but I didn’t have any real training to back that up.”

She started with a plan, found a great school offering programs in Microsoft, Adobe, and QuickBooks along with certifications, and worked with her Career Coach to receive an Individual Training Account grant offered through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) at her American Job Center to pay for these courses.

“The money was an obstacle for me – I was motivated, but needed the training grant to make my goals a reality,” Kamaria says,“and I passed every test, every course, and every certification test because I took advantage of this opportunity – and I guess you can say that now I’m up-skilled!”

Now, she was getting interviews when before she was ignored. “I picked a new opportunity as an Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable Specialist with a manufacturing company and I’m really comfortable there.”

Jamin Secured a Job That Matched His Skills and Ambitions With Support from a Career Coach

“I’m pretty young and just starting out, but I knew I needed help starting a career that paid enough to get me off SNAP benefits!” Jamin recalls, “and that’s why I found my way to the American Job Center at The King Center.”

“My goal was to find work right away. I had some work experience doing some cooking, some cleaning jobs, and I’ve always been good with people. Yeah, I was ready for more.”

Jamin began working with his Career Coach, Adenike, and together they revised his resume to highlight his strengths and met regularly with an E&ES Business Account Executive to discover good employers ready to hire.

“Hey, I just couldn’t get all this going without Adenike and all the applications, interviews, and coaching,” Jamin admits, “It’s just not easy to get a good opportunity that fits my skills and one that I fit for the business.”

Putting all the pieces together gave Jamin a good start with a growing business. “I’m a stocking associate, so it’s my job to checking products received and prepping the for sale, organizing and storing them and keeping good records, and I’m responsible to make sure the pricing is accurate.” he says, “I’m really liking this business and my co-workers, and they like me!”
