Competencies
Summary/Objective
The Digital Navigator position is a part of the Chicago Housing Authority’s (CHA) vision for every CHA resident to have the opportunity to fully engage in a digital world, accessing and using digital technology with skill and confidence. CHA has nine Digital Resource Centers (DRC) located in various CHA family properties and community centers across Chicago. DRC’s are staffed by CHA residents or Housing Choice Voucher Program participants. Each center has computers, updated software, projectors, and Wi-Fi. The position reports to the FamilyWorks agency assigned to the location where the DRC is housed and assists in the daily operations of the site.
Essential Functions
- Collaborate with CHA to plan and implement services in the DRC.
- Open and close the DRC daily.
- Discuss with each user their home internet access or need for home internet access,
- technology experiences, and their access to and use of internet-connected devices. If
- necessary, inform users about affordable home internet options and devices for which they
- qualify. Support their efforts to acquire and maintain appropriate devices.
- Receive, return, or initiate telephone and email contact with residents seeking assistance, or
- identified by FamilyWorks and CHA, related to digital inclusion.
- Provide one-on-one and small group assistance to users who need affordable home internet
- service, affordable internet-capable devices, and/or coaching in introductory digital skills to
- become effective home internet users and be able to participate online fully.
- Help users to access, fill out and/or complete online forms for financial, government an social services resources.
- Assist users with resume formatting and submitting job applications.
- Assist older adults with online activities, including social media, personal devices, and email.
- Facilitate computer classes in the lab as needed.
- Refer patrons to upcoming digital skills trainings or events to enhance digital skills.
- Share information and resources to encourage users to access CHA programs, services, and resources, where appropriate.
- Assist in in the collection of user feedback via focus groups and surveys.
- Maintain daily sign-in sheets and submit monthly Utilization Reports.
- Reserve the DRC for usage by other agencies/partners and maintain a schedule of reservation requests.
- Report and document any instances of misuse or damage of computers, equipment, and abnormal behavior to the FamilyWorks supervisor immediately.
- Operate a variety of equipment including telephone, desktop and laptop computers and printers.
- Perform basic maintenance such as changing toner cartridges, loading paper and clearing
- paper jams, and cleaning equipment between users and as needed.
- Conduct monthly computer updates to ensure the devices work smoothly in the computer lab.
- Uphold CHA’s Digital Resource Center guidelines.
- Perform in accordance with the FamilyWorks agency’s policies and program requirements.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Skills and Experience
- A CHA resident, with preference for those living on site where DRCs are located at CHA
- developments, and lease compliant.
- Possess demonstrated familiarity with basic functions of software, email management, and
- internet navigation.
- Ability to embrace the challenge of learning and teaching basic technological concepts related
- to internet services, computer and device characteristics, and common online services and
- applications.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
- Have a high level of customer service, communication, positivity, and patience as well as the
- ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
- Excellent telephone and online communication skills, including the ability to establish trust
- with individuals of varied educational and cultural backgrounds.
- Have effective time management and task prioritization skills.
- Ability to demonstrate reliability and a sense of humor in working with diverse users,
- coworkers, and community.
- Ability to work successfully with youth, adults, and older adults.
- Commitment to a consistent weekly schedule.
- Ability to work some nights and weekends.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is a field role with a need to perform clerical and administrative duties in a physical office. Role requires an extensive amount of mobility.
Hours of Work
Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Position requires the ability to work on evenings and weekends as needed.
Reporting Relationships
This position reports to the Program manager and works in collaboration with E&ES staff.
Education
Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
